5 Months

I'm happy to report that we have finally made a little progress when it comes to sleep this month. While he is far from sleeping through the entire night, he is going for about 5 hour stretches at a time, which is a huge improvement. He's also done pretty well with his sleep training. Some nights he cries for a few minutes. Other nights he doesn't make a peep.

We have also established a nighttime routine. We bathe Ari, give him a massage with lotion, dress him in his PJ's, feed him, read him a book and say our prayers. It sounds like a lot, but the whole process takes about 30 minutes. Ari goes down for bed most nights between 6:30 and 7:00 PM. He wakes up again around midnight and gets a bottle. He's eating between 6 and 8 oz of formula these days. He'll wake up again around 4 or 5 AM, when I get up to feed him. I actually prefer when he gets up at 4 because that gives me enough time to fall back asleep before Kai wakes up at 7.

At his 4 month check-up, he already weighed over 16 lbs, so I probably could let him cry it out at night, but I have such a soft spot for this baby. He cries so rarely and every time he sees me he greets me with the biggest smile. When he sleeps longer than I expect him too, I literally miss him. It's ridiculous, I know, but true.

Ari continues to be really smiley, but he's been a lot stingier with his laughs. Kai always laughed in response to being tickled. Ari, not so much. Recently though, Ari has begun laughing in response to funny faces and noises. His laugh is addicting. Chances are, if you stop by the house randomly during the day, you will overhear Yo and I acting the fool to get that baby to chuckle. But despite our efforts, Kai is the only one who seems to be able to get Ari to crack up without trying at all.

Laughing isn't his only new trick. Ari has been working on his hand eye coordination. He is very proficient at grabbing any objects within reach and promptly sticking them in his mouth. While he still refuses to roll over (he's not even close, lol!), he is getting really close to being able to sit by himself. He spends a lot of times in his bumbo and can even balance himself in a sitting position for a few seconds before slowly tipping over.

We're putting his improved core strength to good use by letting him log some time in Kai's old jungle jumper. Kai spent hours a day in that thing, so it is bringing back so many memories seeing Ari in it now.

This month we got to celebrate Christmas for the first time as a family of 4. Which left me wondering what would Santa bring for a 5 month old baby? Turns out Santa is a practical fellow and got Ari a few things he needed most: diapers, pajamas, and food.

The doctor gave us the go ahead to begin feeding him solid foods at his last appointment. On Christmas day he got his first taste of rice cereal. He wanted nothing to do with it. I managed to sneak in a spoonful or two but then his lips were on lock down and he averted any attempt to get that spoon near his mouth by moving his head side to side with surprising speed and agility. So I decided to skip straight to green beans the next day. Again, one spoonful and done.

He did seem to like the Mum Mums though. They put his new teeth (he has two!) to good use. The first tooth broke through his gums just in time for his baby blessing on December 9th. The second one broke through about a week later. Just like the good baby he is, he has taken his teething in stride without fussing or complaint.

Most months I stress about getting enough pictures of this too-quickly-changing baby o' mine, but this past month we had two sets of family pictures taken. One at my parents' house over Thanksgiving and one locally by my favorite family photographer Meghan MacAskill. She took the shots of me and Ari and a couple of the pictures above (you will recognize them by their superb quality...as well as by the fact that we are wearing the same clothes). I will post more of these amazing pictures in a separate post.

Kai's School Performance

Kai's preschool class put on a winter program a couple of weeks ago. As it was his very first school performance, Yo even took time off of work to make sure that the whole family could be there to support him. The performance did not disappoint, but then again, can you really go wrong when you have two dozen cute three year olds singing and dancing (or staring blankly at their teachers as they sang and danced?). You be the judge.

This next song cracked me up... not a lot of Johns or Sarahs in this group:

He gets his rhythm from his father:

L'il stinker

If you've seen this view in the last month:

Chances are, you've be SKUNKED.

These skunking attacks started out of the blue. One day I told Kai something he didn't want to hear (like, "Kai, you aren't done with lunch until you eat your carrots,") and next thing I knew, Kai was down on the ground on all fours. He slowly and methodically turned his body around until his little rear was pointed in my direction. And then he thrust his bottom up and out as he made a very convincing spraying sound with his mouth.

I asked, "Did you just skunk me?"

Staying in full character, Kai said nothing in return, but flashed me an angry skunk face, like this:

It was clearly an act of defiance, but as far as acts of defiance go, I found this one to be quite tolerable. For one, I was pretty impressed with my 3-year-olds metaphoric intent. Secondly, it was just straight up funny. So instead of doing the responsible thing and telling Kai that that wasn't an appropriate response to me asking him to do something, I waited until Yo got home... and then bribed Kai with a cookie to "go and skunk, Pappa."

Since then our little skunk has skunked us many a time and earned many a cookie for skunking other people on command.

What a stinker.

Ari's Baby Blessing

Six months before Ari was born we decided that the perfect time to bless our new baby would be when Yo's parents visited in the fall.

And then fall rolled around along with my in-laws' visit and Yo and I totally spaced it.

It wasn't until our friends started asking if the reason his parents were in town was for the blessing that it even dawned on me that, of course, that should have been the plan. (It had been our plan after all.)

I blame my poor planning on sleep deprivation.

Nonetheless, we finally set his blessing date for this past Sunday. While we wish that our families had been able to attend and participate, we were so grateful to get to share the day with some of our closest friends--some of whom had traveled hours just to make it.

Yo was nervous, but did a great job with the blessing (as usual) and Ari was surrounded by so many people who loved him. So the day was perfect.

We kept our plans low key because it is such a hectic time of year for people, but I did throw together a very casual lunch at our house following the blessing.

Overall it was a great day and a great way to celebrate the newest addition to our family.

Apparently Ari's blessing outfit caused a little bit of a stir... I was just going for cute, not controversial

Pay no heed to my twitchy eyes. I had to post this because Ari looked so cute.
This was the only family shot we managed to get because Kai was too busy running in circles around a tree.

Don't they look perfect as a family of 4. No pressure, Gabs!

I mean, really! Could he be any cuter?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Courtesy of a Groupon, Kai got to meet Santa, have story time with Mrs. Claus (and a handful of his closest friends), go on a "train" ride through a tree farm, and then enjoy a picnic lunch. All-in-all it was really fun... at least until Kai started spazzing out on me and running like a pagan through the woods. Apparently he gets too much fresh air and turns feral.

I'm not going to lie, we made a rapid exit while the rest of our friends enjoyed a leisurely lunch. Kai screamed for 10 straight minutes on the way home. While I sang Christmas carols at the top of my lungs. It was magical.

Oh well, at least some day I will have really cute pictures and a foggy memory about how the day actually went. That's what it's all about, right?

My favorite part about reviewing these pictures....

Notice something in Kai's hands? Looks like he's holding a saw to me. A saw! That would explain why he was saying, "Look at me, Mommy! I'm sawing the tree!"

Somehow through the viewfinder of the camera I neglected to notice that he wasn't just pretending. Stellar parenting, I know.

4 months

I've seen more changes in Ari in the last month (even two weeks) than I did in the first 3 months of his life. Here are some of the things he's been working on...

1. Holding his head up nice and steady
2. Grabbing objects with his hands
3. Putting anything he gets his hands on into his mouth
4. Turning in the direction of familiar voices
5. Making more sounds like his fake cough
6. Sleeping without being swaddled
7. Rolling onto his side (not quite ready to roll all the way over)
8. Laughing in response to games like peek-a-boo
9. Sleeping in a crib in his own bedroom (instead of a pack 'n play in ours)

Ari also got to experience a couple of firsts this past month:

First plane ride
First night spent away from home
First time meeting his cousins and uncles

Sleep continues to be a battle for this little one. A few weeks ago I started making a really concerted effort to get Ari on a nighttime routine and to put him down when he was drowsy, but not asleep so that he could learn how to soothe himself and hopefully begin sleeping for longer stretches. My efforts led to inconsistent and not overly promising results, so I decided to put sleep training on hold until after we got back from Miami. We are now in the throws of hardcore sleep training. I hate it. I go back and forth between feeling sorry for Ari to just being downright annoyed by his bellowing. And stubborn bugger can bellow! Sometimes for an hour or more. It totally puts my nerves on edge. But I'm keeping my eye on the prize and hope that when I do his 5 month update that I'll be able to report that he is sleeping through the night. That would be the BEST Christmas present ever.

Over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go

Ok, we technically flew over the river (and I'm sure some woods, too). And my parents live in a condo not a house. That's how empty-nesters roll in Miami. And I don't think my mom would be charmed if we started referring to her as "grandmother." She's definitely more of a grandma. But all that aside, we had a very traditional Thanksgiving.

The entire family gathered (sans two husbands, but they are technically in-laws, and one of them is foreign so Thanksgiving isn't really his thing anyway). We watched the Macy's Thanksgiving parade in all of it's terrible, but nostalgic glory. We stuffed ourselves silly. Lounged around in our pajamas well into the afternoon. Watched football. Stuffed ourselves silly some more. And watched some more football. It was perfect.

And for Kai who lives far too far away from any extended family, it was heavenly having cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents to entertain him.

It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without a turkey... or a tofurkey (if you're Devin)

How do you get a "serious" picture of family members who would rather make faces like this?

Sneak a shot when no one is expecting it:

I don't get to see these guys enough (by the way, did you know I have two brothers?)

Eating pie for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving is a time honored tradition... one that my mom made sure that Kai did not miss out on.

When we weren't stuffing our pie holes, we spent a lot of time at the park just across the street from my parents place:

With all of the attention that Kai was getting, I didn't see a whole lot of him. But every once in a while he would stop by to say, "hi!"

Cousins

The end of the long weekend came too soon when my sister, brother, Devin, and nephews had to pack up and head home.

I even snapped a few photos of their departure. Grandma Vivian would have been so proud!
