All about Ari - in 25 facts

1. He has the most delightful curls growing in on the back of his head. I especially love the way that they wing out above his ears.

2. Everyone says that he has my eyes. I'm not sure that they are right, but I love his eyes. They absolutely sparkle and are so expressive and when he smiles they look like sidewise crescent moons.

3. He loves music. When a song comes on that appeals to him he will bounce up and down and bob his head and sometimes clap along to the beat.

4. He has an adventurous palette. While he sometimes turns his nose up at baby food, he eats a lot of ethnic foods and other foods with complex flavors or textures.

5. He has already mastered the art of torturing his brother. Kai's idea of a good time is meticulously lining up his toys in a straight line or, better yet, some intricate pattern. Ari's idea of a good time is wreaking havoc. He gets the greatest pleasure out of destroying Kai's creations and cannot be distracted from his mission by any other temptation. It makes for long days spent at our house.

6. When Ari is bored he will crawl over to Kai and pinch or hit him and then shake his head "no no" in acknowledgement that it was a naughty thing to do when I catch his eye.

7. At home, Ari whines at me, a lot, but when we are out of the house, he is usually content to sit and watch people and everything that is happening around him. So most of my friends refuse to believe me when I say that Ari can be a difficult baby (I think my family and Yo's family have now spent enough time with him to know that I speaketh the truth.)

8. Ari loves balls. He will play basketball at home for as long as I have the patience and energy to lift him up with the ball and allow him to drop it through our little play hoop.

9. He can't resist a soft surface. If you put a blanket or pillow in his path, he cannot help but rest his head on it for a few sweet seconds before moving along.

10. While Kai is naturally cautious, Ari is a daredevil. Nothing delights him more than being thrown up into the air. He is attracted to anything dangerous. If he is near a ledge, he wants to throw himself down it. If there is a body of water he wants to jump in it. If there is an outlet, he wants to stick his finger in it. He is that child.

11. I think he is left-handed.

12. He is a cuddler. He sits happily in my lap for long stretches and is known to lay his head down on my shoulder or to climb on top of me for a quick snuggle anytime I'm on the floor.

13. He gives great open-mouthed kisses with a twinkle in his eye.

14. He loves books about animals and the lift the flap kind.

15. He already insists on doing things for himself, like trying to put on his own shoes or feed himself with a spoon. Based on this and the fact that he has quite the fiery temper, I worry what two has in store for us if he is like this at one.

16. The kid can scream. For hours. And he has really healthy lungs. Just when you think he might be done, he will catch a 2nd and 3rd and 4th wind.

17. It took a really long time to sleep train him.

18. He is stubborn. When he first started crawling he climbed out the backdoor head first and bonked his head on the pavement. He cried long and hard for a few minutes as I consoled him. But when I put him down he went right back to the door and climbed in and out again and again, bonking his head several times and crying several more times before he finally mastered it.

19. Nothing makes him laugh harder than when you nuzzle him with your head.

20. He loves Kai. Whenever Kai stays still long enough for Ari to catch up to him, Ari will sit by him--practically on top of him--and rest his hand on Kai's back or shoulder and he will stay that way until Kai is on the move again.

21. He likes the water. One of his favorite bath time tricks is to lean forward and dip his face in the water. He also likes to play a game at the pool where he is sitting on the side of the pool and on the count of three he will lean forward to fall into my arms going entirely under water in the process.

22. He constantly is pointing at things and saying something that sounds like, "what's that?"

23. He says a few words like "doggy" "mama" "woof" "baa" "quack" and "baby".

24. I think one of the reasons that he doesn't talk more is because he is so good at getting his point across without saying a word. He is quite good at using hand gestures and facial expressions to let you know exactly what he wants and exactly how he feels.

25. He is just plain funny. There is something about him--his facial expressions, his mannerisms, his orneriness--that makes me chuckle and shake my head. When people ask me to describe Ari I usually say he is equal parts naughty and nice, sweet and sour. He really is so different from Kai and has made it known from day one that he is his own person. It has been such a fun year getting to know this little trouble maker. He definitely keeps life interesting and keeps all of us on our toes. We can't imagine life without him.

Ari's Birthday Weekend Extravaganza

July 27th was Ari's first birthday. And, as far as birthdays go, I figure a first birthday is pretty important so I made sure that we celebrated our little Ari in grand style for his entire birthday weekend.

With Yo's current work schedule, he has Fridays off. We took advantage and decided to head to the San Francisco Zoo for the day. Ari really likes animals and it seemed like the perfect way to kick off the weekend. On the way there we stopped for some sandwiches at Ike's Sandwich Lair. It lived up to the hype. I've already been back 3 times since then and I am craving a Steve Job right now.

We stopped at a park in Cupertino to eat our sandwiches and that gave me the perfect chance to snap a few shots of the boys.

Kai and Ari had a great time in the kids' section of the zoo which includes a great petting zoo.

We usually time our zoo trips all wrong and end up there when all the animals are sleeping our hiding somewhere out of view. But this trip was the exception. A lot of the animals were awake and active and we even got to see some of them being fed. Not to mention, a hippo almost sprayed us with it's poop. It was an action-packed day.

One of the highlights of our day was getting to watch a mother tiger give her baby tiger a very thorough bath just a couple of feet from us. It was awesome (although the following picture is not). Haha!

Saturday was Ari's actual birthday. So we got up early and headed to the Palo Alto Creamery for a delicious family breakfast. It did not disappoint.

Before we had cake that night, I made Ari indulge me by posing for a few birthday pictures.

He was all smiles until I made him wear his birthday hat.

So we hurried on to the cake portion of the evening, hoping to distract him. Yo was in charge of presenting the cake while I manned the camera.

Someone forgot to tell Yo that putting a lit candle inches from a one-year-old is not a good idea. Ari immediately tried to touch the flame with his finger while I watched in horror from behind the lens.

So I yelled to Yo to blow out the candle. Which frightened Ari.

He was crying. Yo was mad at me for yelling because he "had it under control."

I was mad at Yo for putting the candle near Ari in the first place and felt bad for making Ari cry on his birthday. It made for a pretty pathetic picture.

Luckily, Ari was quickly distracted by the fact that there was a huge piece of chocolate cake sitting in front of him and no one was stopping him from eating it. He dove right in.

After a quick bath, we let Ari open his presents (with a bit of help from big brother). He got a Melissa & Doug ball ramp thingy and a pillow pet from me and Yo and a set of instruments from my parents. He loves them as much as I hoped that he would.

I debated about whether to have a party for Ari with our friends. We didn't back from Miami until the 22nd and Yo was already in Colorado for the week which left me at home to unpack, do laundry and get the boys back into their routines alone. So throwing a last minute party on top of all that felt like a bit much, but in the end I decided to just invite some friends to share dinner and cake with us at the park on Sunday afternoon. It was low key. I set the tone for just how low key when I simply sent out a text message in lieu of an invite to our friends. But it was still a lot of fun. In Sunnyvale our closest friends really have become family to us and it only felt right to include them as we celebrated Ari.

Cute family(?) pic. Somehow I didn't manage to get one shot with me and Yo in it together. Christian, you don't make a poor substitute.

The birthday boy in all his cuteness (still not loving the hat though)
A quick birthday snuggle with Pappa
Molly sneaking in some aunt time with l'il Davis before his big move to Utah

The ever-photogenic Spiers. (Don't over-analyze, Megan. You look hot. As always. Smirk and all.)

I made a cake for Kai when he turned 1, so I decided I owed Ari the same. But I have to admit, this one was not as well thought through. Oh well, it tasted good and he didn't seem to mind.

If you've ever read my friend The Mostess's blog, you know that she revels in posting bad pictures of me (and I have given her plenty of material). So I thought I would return the favor.

She claims that this was a piece of chocolate that melted in her pocket.

The only time that Kai was near enough and still enough to be photographed was when he was eating cake.

This has to be one of my favorite pictures of the day. A whole row of cute boys eating their cake. Does it get any better?

I know how much everyone loves to be photographed while they are stuffing their pie holes. Thank you so much Aufdermauers for the following montage:

All-in-all it was the perfect end to a perfect birthday weekend. We love you Ari and cannot imagine life without you. It's hard to believe it has already been a year since I first held you in my arms, but it's harder to believe that life ever existed without you. Here's to your first birthday and many more to come!
